Overview: In this article they talk about the two new studies on how music can make people more likely to agree to cause someone harm. The first study was to determine the relationship between music and compliance. 120 participants met with a male research assistant while either a familiar, liked song played or a familiar song with foreign lyrics, an unfamiliar, pleasant song, or no music at all. The assistant would then ask them to call another student who also needed course credit to tell them that their meeting was cancelled because the assistant simply "didn't feel like it". The participants who listened to music were more likely to tell the other student. The second study used a female research assistant and this time only pleasant music was played. The participants were told that the assistants partner was ill and missed class and she had course materials for her to pick up but she changed her mind and didn't want to give them to her and had to tell her the assistant wasn't there. Just like the first study the participant who listened to music were more likely to tell her partner.
My questions and thoughts: The results struck me because I would have thought that the participants who didn't listen to music would be more likely to cause the other person harm than the participants that listened to pleasant music. This makes me wonder what would happen if some of the participants listened to unpleasant music.
