| This lab took a while and took a few tries to get right, but in the end our crystals came out great. They took so long because we always ran out of time and had to remelt the bismuth the next day. The day we finally got them done they came out great, Andrew even helped us get them to be a the really cool colors they are and helped maintain their color by putting propane on them immediately. Looking back: Our experiment went great, I am really happy how the color of the crystals turned out. Looking beyond: I don't have any idea on how the bismuth crystalized, but I do know that the more you moved it the more it vibrated with created smaller crystals. Also propane helps keep its color because oxygen makes the bismuth lose color whereas propane does the opposite and not only helps keep the cool colors but makes it that color. Looking inward: We got very good results and my whole group was happy with what we got. What I think contributed to our desirable results was the propane. Looking outward: For this lab I worked with Autrina and Evan, I hadn't worked with them before but I like working with them. I think we performed really well. Looking forward: There isn't anything I can think of to do differently to get better results. If i were organizing a group I would chose both of them we all work really well together. Takeaways: Since this lab took a while a takeaway for me is while waiting i should work on other ting, for example a worksheet. |
Me and a group of friends met up at school on September 27th to meet up with the astronomy club and watch the blood moon. Unfortunately we didn't get the memo that the astronomy club wasn't even meeting at school but I still had a great time and enjoyed watching it with my friends. A lunar eclipse other known as a blood moon happens when the Earth moves in between the sun and the moon. Then sunlight passes the Earths atmosphere which turns the moon red. The moon was a lot more red than what you see in the picture, also a lot bigger. I had such a good time that I would like to do this again, with or without the astronomy club.
| For this lab I worked with Elyse again and we made caramel ice cream to study the phase changes that the liquid goes through to become thicker and more like a solid. This lab was really fun and easier than I thought. This lab was a big success, we made so much ice cream we were able to give some to teachers and students. Looking back: Our experiment went great, we were able to make enough for ourselves and our teachers but a lot of our classmates. Looking beyond: Since the bowl that the ice cream was spinning had been sitting in the freezer for a very long time I think thats what froze the ice cream molecules. Looking inward: I think because we were so excited for this lab and how it turned out that made us more focused which made us get our great results. I think i performed my best in this lab. Looking outward: Elyse and I performed extremely well, this lab was a huge success. What i contributed was mixing and taking pictures. Looking forward: Again if I were to organizing a group Elyse would be on it, we work really well together. If we were to do this again I don;t think there is anything we would do differently to get better results. Takeaways: A takeaway from this lab is to be more focused. |
For our first project of section 2 Elyse and I decided to make a rubber egg. To make a rubber egg you will only need an egg, vinegar, and a cup. We put the egg in the cup and fill the cup with vinegar until it cover the whole egg then waited a week. Unfortunately this time we didn't let the eggs sit in the vinegar long enough so when we tried bouncing them just a foot off the ground they broke. Looking back: Since we didn't let our egg sit in vinegar long enough it didn't work. I think we let it sit just long enough were the egg shell dissolved and just left the membrane but the egg wasn't cooked enough. Looking beyond: I am not really sure what happens on a molecular level but I do know that the vinegar actually cooks the egg. So when we dropped it and it broke the yolk and egg whites were still runny. Looking inward: We did not get desirable results because we didn't let the egg sit in the vinegar long enough so the egg wasn't cooked Looking outward: For this lab I worked with Elyse and I think we performed well, although it didn't work we are going to try again. It was my first time working with her or anyone other than Mayra. This was a great experience and I'm glad I got out of my comfort zone and worked with someone I wasn't very close to. Looking forward: If I could do this again I would let the egg sit in the vinegar longer. If I were organizing a group for the next lab activity I would definitely choose Elyse, I think we work really well together. We are continuing this project and redoing it to get better results. Takeaways; A takeaway from this lab is to do more research. Instead of just looking at one site look at a couple. I think if we did more research then we would have known to let the egg sit in the vinegar longer. Also |
