Since we wanted to make our rocket as light as possible we decided to make everything ourselves. It might take longer but we figure it will be worth it in the end. We worked very hard this week and I am very pleased with the work done and the quality of our work. I am really excited for our final product. Next week we plan on building the parachute, nose cone, and shock cord.
To make the body as light as possible we cut 3 strips of paper with a width of about 2 inches. After that we wrapped one strip of paper around a pipe, that was measured ahead and holds our motor perfectly, we taped that strip so that it wouldn't move while we applied the next strip very carefully with glue. With the last strip of paper we glued it on going around the other way so that it would reinforce the seams of the other strips. We only applied the three strips because that was just enough so that our body would be sturdy without it being very heavy. After we waited a day for it to dry we took it off the pipe and began painting it.
We decided to make our fins out of basil wood so that it would be really light. We looked online to see what kind of different fins we could do for our rocket. When we found one we liked wrote it on a paper and figured out our measurements we drew in on pieces of basil wood. We then cut them out, painted them, and glued them on our rocket.
