| In today's lab we mixed cornstarch and water to make oobleck. The purpose of this lab was to find out weather oobleck was a liquid or a solid, and what lead you to consider it a liquid or solid. A solid being molecules packed in fixed positions with definite volume and shaped. And a liquid being molecules packed tightly with room to slide around with definite volume and indefinite shape. It was hard to figure out which it was because the oobleck took the shape of the bowl like a liquid would have and if you let your hand rest on top (without applying any pressure) it would become a liquid. However it also became a solid when you applied pressure. I've learned that oobleck is neither a liquid nor a solid but a non-newtonian substance. If i had to propose a theory as to why oobleck behaves as both a solid and a liquid, it would be that when no pressure is applied the molecules slide past creating it to flow like a liquid but when pressure is applied the molecules packed in and cannot move. |
